Frequently asked questions

A little clarity goes a long way.

Practical answers about beginning therapy, online appointments, fees, privacy, and what you can expect.

Getting started

Do I need a referral?+

No. You can book a free consultation or therapy appointment directly.

Who does Waypoint work with?+

Waypoint currently provides individual therapy to adults aged 18 and older. Couples, family, group, youth, and child therapy are not currently offered.

What happens during the free consultation?+

The free 15-minute consultation is a brief conversation about what is bringing you to therapy, what you are looking for, and any questions you have. It is also an opportunity for you and your therapist to decide whether working together feels like a good fit.

What should I expect in my first therapy session?+

The first session focuses on getting to know you, understanding what has been happening, reviewing informed consent and privacy, and discussing what you would like from therapy. You do not need to prepare a complete history or share anything before you are ready.

What if my therapist isn’t the right fit?+

Fit matters. You can discuss concerns openly, change the focus of the work, ask about other options or referrals when available, or choose to stop therapy at any time.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on?+

No. Many people begin with a general sense that something feels difficult, exhausting, or stuck. Therapy can help you understand what is happening and decide together where to begin.

Appointments and online therapy

Where is online therapy available?+

We work with adult clients who are physically located in Alberta or Saskatchewan at the time of the session.

Can I attend a session while I am outside Alberta or Saskatchewan?+

No. You must be physically located in Alberta or Saskatchewan at the time of each appointment. Please tell your therapist if you will be travelling so your session can be rescheduled when necessary.

How do virtual sessions work?+

You’ll receive a private link for a secure video appointment. You will need a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space.

How long is a therapy session?+

Standard individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Free consultations are 15 minutes.

How often will we meet?+

Many people begin weekly or every two weeks. You and your therapist will decide together based on your needs, schedule, and budget.

How do I know whether online therapy is right for me?+

Online therapy may be a good fit if you have a private space, reliable internet, and feel comfortable meeting by video. A free consultation can help you consider whether virtual care suits your needs and circumstances.

What happens if technology fails during a session?+

You and your therapist will agree on a backup plan before or at the beginning of therapy. Depending on the situation, the session may continue by another approved method or be rescheduled.

Addiction and perinatal support

Do I need to be abstinent to receive substance-use support?+

No. You do not need to be abstinent or committed to a particular recovery goal. Therapy can explore substance use without judgment and may support harm reduction, recovery, abstinence, relapse prevention, or greater clarity about what you want.

Do you offer pregnancy and postpartum therapy?+

Yes. Waypoint offers support during pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition into parenthood. Therapy may address anxiety, isolation, identity changes, relationship strain, grief, difficult birth experiences, substance-use concerns, and adjustment to parenthood.

Fees and insurance

Do you direct bill insurance?+

Yes. Waypoint offers direct billing to participating insurance plans when your coverage permits it. Coverage varies, so please confirm that Registered Social Worker services are included in your plan. View the complete list on the Fees & Insurance page.

What happens if insurance covers only part of the session fee?+

You are responsible for any portion of the fee that is not covered by your plan. Coverage amounts, deductibles, and benefit-assignment rules are determined by your insurer.

Will I receive a receipt?+

Yes. You will receive a detailed receipt for any amount you pay, which you can retain for insurance, health spending, or tax records where applicable.

What is the cancellation policy?+

Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged the full session fee, except where circumstances make this unreasonable.

Privacy, documentation, and other services

How is my privacy protected during online therapy?+

Privacy, the limits of confidentiality, electronic communication, record keeping, and the practical risks of virtual care are reviewed during informed consent. Clients are encouraged to join from a private space and use a secure personal device whenever possible.

Can you provide documentation that I attended therapy?+

Yes. At your request, Waypoint can provide documentation confirming that you attended therapy. This is limited to attendance confirmation and is not an assessment, medical opinion, disability determination, legal report, or recommendation for a third party.

Do you complete assessments, disability forms, court reports, or legal letters?+

Not at this time. Waypoint currently provides individual adult therapy and can confirm attendance when requested, but does not provide formal assessments, disability determinations, court reports, custody opinions, or forensic services.

Does Waypoint work with agencies and organizations?+

Yes. Waypoint welcomes enquiries about contracted client services, reflective practice supervision and groups, team consultation, workshops, program development and evaluation, policy development, and other custom social work contracts. Reflective practice services are not clinical supervision.

What if I am in crisis?+

Waypoint is not a crisis service. Call or text 988 for suicide crisis support, call 911 in an emergency, or go to your nearest emergency department.
