Emily Kennedy
Registered Social Worker providing online therapy in Alberta and Saskatchewan
Emily Kennedy is a Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master of Social Work in Clinical Social Work from the University of Calgary. Her graduate studies focused on Community-Informed Practice for Health & Well-being, strengthening her clinical skills while maintaining the broader perspective that is central to social work: people do not struggle in isolation. Relationships, personal history, health, identity, community, and access to support can all affect how someone is doing.
Emily works with adults and has a particular interest in addiction, substance use, harm reduction, recovery, and perinatal mental health. She also supports women during pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition into parenthood.
You do not need to know exactly what you want from therapy before reaching out. Many people begin knowing only that something feels wrong, exhausting, or increasingly difficult to carry. We can start there.
Addiction and Substance Use
When substance use has become complicated, it can be difficult to know where to turn without feeling judged or pressured. Therapy offers a place to talk honestly about the role substances are playing, what needs they may be meeting, what they may be costing, and what—if anything—you want to change.
There is no assumption that everyone should have the same goal. Our work can support harm reduction, recovery, abstinence, relapse prevention, or simply a clearer understanding of your relationship with substances. Together, we can identify what matters to you and work toward changes that feel realistic in your life.
Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Parenthood
Pregnancy and early parenthood are not always the joyful, uncomplicated experiences people expect them to be. This stage can involve anxiety, isolation, identity changes, relationship strain, grief, difficult birth experiences, substance-use concerns, and pressure to appear as though everything is fine.
Therapy can be a private place to say the things that feel difficult to say anywhere else. Together, we can make sense of what you are experiencing, identify the support you need, and find manageable ways forward during pregnancy, postpartum, or adjustment to parenthood.
What Therapy With Emily Is Like
Emily’s approach is warm, practical, honest, and collaborative. Sessions provide room to tell your story, understand difficult experiences, and notice patterns without feeling analyzed or judged.
The work may include thoughtful questions, practical strategies, honest observations, and compassionate challenge. You remain the expert on your own life, and decisions about goals and the direction of therapy are made together.
Therapy can involve serious and painful conversations without feeling cold or overly clinical. There is room for humour, uncertainty, frustration, and showing up exactly as you are.
The purpose is not to tell you who to be. It is to help you understand what is happening, decide what matters to you, and work toward changes that fit your circumstances, strengths, and values.
